Trump’s Pick for Army Secretary Believes Civilians Should Have Access to Military Weapons

President Trump has had no shortage of controversial picks for his cabinet and various government agencies. It seems like there isn’t anyone he can choose who won’t anger the establishment Democrats, establishment Republicans, or his own supporters.

Among them is Tennessee state Sen. Mark Green, who is a former Army medic and a West Point graduate. So what’s controversial about this politician? He happens to have a view of the Second Amendment that would be considered insane by most liberals, and pretty extreme by many gun owners.

Green told a pro-gun rally in 2013 that “The Second Amendment, while it allows citizens to protect themselves from other citizens, goes well beyond just allowing us to defend ourselves from a criminal. The men who penned and ratified this document gave us the right to keep and bear arms as an ultimate checks and balances against the federal government. When considering magazine size and weapon type, comments like, ‘You don’t need a 10-round magazine to hunt deer’ completely misses the point of the Second Amendment.”

That of course, is a very common belief among gun owners. What he said next however, is a belief that many gun owners don’t share. “The citizenry should be allowed to maintain whatever weapon the federal government has. If they can have an aircraft carrier, I ought to be able to have an aircraft carrier.”

Though it’s considered an extreme opinion by most people on both the left and the right, it’s not without merit. If the Second Amendment exists to protect us from the military might of both foreign governments and our own government, then it should grant us the right to own weapons that are comparable to what these governments can deploy. The right to bear arms doesn’t specify what kinds of arms are allowed, right?

If his nomination is approved by the senate, he would probably be the most pro-Second Amendment appointment ever made by President Trump. Regardless of whether or not you agree with him completely, that would be a good thing. Unfortunately, he is being heavily criticized for his views on LGBT issues, Islam, and evolution. And for that, he is likely to withdraw from the nomination this week. They’ll probably appoint some establishment hack instead.
