On July 19 the establishment media reported Trump has decided to put an end to the CIA’s covert support for jihadists in Syria attempting to oust President Bashar al-Assad. The program was reportedly put into place by the Obama administration in 2013.


It was reported earlier that Trump had made the decision to shutter the program after meeting with his CIA director and national security adviser prior to a July 7 meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.


US Special Operations Commander Tony Thomas confirmed Trump’s decision on July 21. “At least from what I know about that program and the decision to end it, absolutely not a sop to the Russians,” Thomas said at the Aspen Security Fourm, an annual gathering of establishment insiders discussing national security.
