In a terrifying incident caught on video, Minneapolis police collaborated with bystanders to pull two people out of a burning car.

A tow truck driver captured the rescue on a cell phone camera, and on Tuesday, Minneapolis police released dash cam video of the incident, reports KARE11.

Officers Krystle Fallon and Ryan Davis were responded to a call about a car plunging off an overpass onto the I-94 highway in the north of the city when they discovered a man and woman trapped inside the wreckage.

“I couldn’t immediately tell how to get her out of the vehicle so I ran around to the driver’s side rear passenger door,” Fallon said at a media event at the crash site Tuesday.

“When I saw flames coming out of the hood [I knew] that we had a short amount of time. That’s when I yelled to my partner, we’ve got to get these people out now.”

A witness, Da’Koi Hines, described the scene to the StarTribune:

Hines was taking out the garbage just before 10 p.m. when he saw the Cadillac ATS strike the curb where Washington turns into 41st Avenue N., then go airborne through a guardrail and plunge several feet onto the westbound lanes of Interstate 94 below. The car landed on its wheels and caught fire just as rescue workers arrived and pulled a man and a woman out of the car, another witness said.

“I saw the car rolling,” Hines said of the horrific wreck. “There were car pieces all over the place. They had to break the door to get the people out.”

Paramedics performed CPR on the driver, identified by the State Patrol as Floyd Douglas Cunningham, 31, of Minneapolis.

While rescuers performed CPR on Cunningham, the car exploded.

The passenger, Lancha Robertson, 37, of Minneapolis, walked to a stretcher. Both victims were taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. Cunningham died at the hospital. Robertson was in critical condition Thursday morning, reports the StarTribune.

The patrol’s preliminary report indicates that both Cunningham and Robertson were wearing seat belts and that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
