The War Democrats: Harry S. Truman

2-10-2017 < Boiling Frogs Post 106 231 words

President Harry S. Truman ushered in the era of atomic weapons, the Cold War, and the national security state. In this episode of The Geopolitical Report, we look at the decision to kill thousands of Japanese with two atomic bombings despite the fact they were ready to surrender. The bomb was a kick-off to the Red Scare and decades of conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. Unlike the First World War, the Second didn’t bring about demobilization and disarmament after its conclusion. Truman’s new “beast” was the Soviet Union and communism. On March 12, 1947, he went before a joint session of Congress and promised to help any country fighting a Communist takeover. The policy became known as Containment of Communism, or the Truman Doctrine, and has ruled American foreign policy ever since, although the roster of official enemies changed after the fall of the Soviet Union.
