Spain's central government has announced the dissolution of the regional parliament in Catalonia, with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy declaring that new elections will be held in the region on December 21.

Following the Catalan parliament's earlier vote on Friday, in which it made the decision to announce the region's independence from Spain, the government in Madrid fired the cabinet.

"We believe it is urgent to listen to Catalan citizens, to all of them, so that they can decide their future and nobody can act outside the law on their behalf," Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said in a televised speech, as cited by Reuters.
