Here is a wonderful feel-good story just in case your faith in humanity needs to be restored. Representatives for a Maine Toys R Us store say a husband and wife stopped in to pay off $10,000 in layaway orders for other families for the Christmas season.

WGME-TV reports the couple is local and desired to remain anonymous when making the payment at the South Portland store. Store manager Jay Roes says the money is enough to pay off the balance on about 100 layaway accounts. The gift will help make Christmas more affordable for dozens of families in the area.

The total layaway balance at the store remains around $25,000. “A nice couple, local, wants to be anonymous came in and wanted to pay off $10,000 in people’s layaways,” said store manager Jay Roes. “It’s a good feeling for my staff to be able to do that for people and it’s amazing that someone is that generous to take care of people that obviously might need a little help,” Roes said.

Customers who’ve been in so far to discover their layaway items were paid off are seeing their Christmas spirit soar. Roes said it’s the biggest layaway payoff he’s ever seen. “My cashier was able to let her know that she didn’t have a balance due and she could pick up her stuff. It took her a minute to understand what happened and she cried at the front of my store,” Roes said.

The secret Santa couple say they now want to match donations other people make toward the layaway accounts of strangers at Toys R Us.

What a fantastic way to celebrate the holiday season.
