Too much democracy is a dangerous thing, according to a video produced by the state-run BBC, that claims people should respect the authority of elites because “the fervor of populist politics can be truly terrifying.”

The video cites the glorious Brexit vote as the kind of populist movement that must be suppressed in the future. The video also disparages the triumphant election of President Donald Trump and the magnificent French Revolution, in which the people gained rights as citizens and ended the reign of the corrupt aristocracy.

The video also explains that “populist is almost always a pejorative term and no one really wants the label,” claiming that “most populist leaders would rather see themselves as inspiring grassroots movements.”

Political debate involves reason, science, evidence, challenge, and argument. Free speech and a free press on vital to this,” the narrator says.

Populists, in contrast, love stirring hearts with rhetoric, aren’t renowned for using reason and evidence and argument, and are keen in dividing the world into ‘us’ and ‘them’.
