An Iowa couple and their two young children were found dead in a rented condominium in Mexico, authorities said.

The Sharp family was reported missing by relatives in their hometown of Creston early Friday, about a week after the family left for vacation.

Creston police said they contacted the U.S. Department of State, and the bodies were found during a welfare check at the condo in Akumal near Tulum. Police said there were no obvious signs of foul play.

A spokeswoman for the Fiscal General de Quintana Roo told CBS Radio an autopsy is underway in Playa del Carmen at the state's forensic medicine facility. She said there was no blood, bullet holes or mess in the room when police found the family.

Union County authorities said the family members were identified as 41-year-old Kevin Sharp; his wife, 38-year-old Amy Sharp; and their children, 12-year-old Sterling and 7-year-old Adrianna.

Relatives said the family arrived safely near Tulum on March 15, but they hadn’t heard from the family since.

Authorities said it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the deaths. Autopsy reports are pending.
