President Trump, with his dim grasp of history and geopolitics, has his own take on the Libyan model.

“That model… was total decimation. That model would take place if we don’t make a deal,” he told reporters at the White House.

However, that’s not exactly what his national security adviser John Bolton had in mind when he brought up the so-called Libyan model in regard to negotiations with North Korea and Kim Jung-un.

Bolton’s remark was about the 2003 agreement to dismantle Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi’s weapons of mass destruction programs.

After Gaddafi signed off on the agreement as part of a move to improve relations with the West and gain relief from sanctions, the United States, United Kingdom, and international organizations dismantled Libya’s chemical and nuclear weapons programs and Gaddafi’s long-range ballistic missiles.
