A Syrian student at Tishreen University, Ali al-Hassoun Bakeer, has invented an artificial hand. The smart “palm” is designed to operate naturally, based on the pulse of a person’s muscles. Bakeer told SANA the invention is intended to help all people with disabilities, including wounded soldiers of the Syrian Army.

While Silicon Valley pundits debate what the next Snapchat will be, innovation is happening where it’s needed most.

Bakeer says he also has plans for a similar application for feet. Watch:
