Italy has seen a massive drop in the number of asylum requests in the second quarter of the year, ANSA reports

Compared with the same period in 2017, there were 20,500 fewer asylum requests in the second quarter of 2018. Looking at the first quarter of 2018 and 2017, there’s a drop of 4,500 requests.

The statistics were provided by Eurostat on Tuesday. “It is the country with the most marked absolute drop in requests, followed by Germany (-12,000 over the year)”, the agency says.

In Spain and Greece the migrant crisis is reviving as the number of yearly requests rose by 6,600 and in 5,800 compared with last year.

While Spain is welcoming migrants and offers them benefits and healthcare, the situation in Italy is much different.

Lega leader and Italy’s Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini, has blocked several migrant ships from entering Italy’s ports and has even started deporting migrants.

Mohamed Konare, an African migrant who has lived for several decades in Italy has even advised the current government to shut the borders.

He sees little chance for young Africans in Italy and they will certainly end up on the streets without knowing the culture.

Konare thinks this could lead to a civil war as “Italians who are in difficulty will find themselves confronted with thousands, hundreds of thousands of hungry Africans”.

“Our scope is to avoid having a war break out between Italians and Africans. The only way to avoid this above all is to close the borders,” Konare said.
