President Trump on Friday issued an emergency declaration for Alaska, ordering federal assistance to support response efforts following a 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit the Anchorage area earlier in the day.

Trump's action allows the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help coordinate relief efforts in the area, the White House noted in its statement on the move late Friday.

The agencies will support ongoing state, tribal and local responses to devastation from the earthquake that hit north of Anchorage early Friday.
