The Saudi Embassy in Washington has been accused of helping a Saudi student accused of murdering a teenage girl in a hit and run accident leave the country two weeks before his trial, US media reported.

In August 2016, 21-year-old Abdulrahman Sameer Norah illegally sped through a Portland intersection mowing down 15-year-old Fallon Smart, killing her, local newspapers reported at the time.

A US court charged him with manslaughter, punishable with a prison term of at least ten years, fleeing from the crime scene and reckless driving.

According to the newspaper, on 10 June 2017, Norah removed a monitoring device police has placed on his ankle and disappeared. This is believed to have been done with the help of the Saudi Embassy. The newspaper added that Norah is believed to have obtained forged travel documents and fled the US onboard a private jet.

Saudi officials have recently confirmed to US federal officers that Norah returned to Saudi Arabia nearly 18 months ago but could not hand him over because the US does not have a bilateral extradition treaty with Saudi Arabia.
