from Govt Slaves:

Customers of CenturyLink are experiencing a nationwide internet outage that reportedly is affecting 911 emergency calls and causing other havoc in some areas of the country.

According to the website downdetector.com, the outage is affecting many areas across the Pacific Northwest and other parts of the country, including Seattle, Denver, Portland, Los Angeles, Dallas, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, Boise, Chicago, Phoenix, Cincinnati and other areas.

In Idaho, the outage is affecting phone services for some government agencies, including the state Department of Corrections and Department of Labor. Some ATMs also were knocked out of commission in Idaho.

Other areas have lost 911 service as a result of the outage, including some counties in Missouri near St. Louis, parts of Minnesota and the area around Cochise, Ariz.

The breakdown began early Thursday morning, at around 2 a.m., in some parts of the country. By 4 a.m., the outage had become widespread. There was no immediate word on how long it would take to repair the problem.

CenturyLink issued the following statement about the outage:

“Our network is experiencing a disruption affecting customer services. We understand some customers are currently unable to generate tickets through the CenturyLink help portal. We know how important these services are to our customers and we are working to restore services as quickly as possible.”

Customers vented their fury over the outage via Twitter and other social media. Much of the outrage focused on the fact that CenturyLink had not communicated well about the problem or issued any estimate of how long it would last.

Several customers said they had waited for hours on hold to speak with a company representative only to give up in frustration.
