Trump addresses Americans about border ‘crisis’ amid gov’t shutdown

8-1-2019 < RT 33 184 words

In his first-ever primetime address to the nation from the Oval Office, President Donald Trump is addressing what the White House has called a “humanitarian and national security crisis” on the border with Mexico.

Though the US president has addressed the nation 15 times over the past two years, this is the first time he has requested evening air time from major networks. The address comes amid an ongoing partial shutdown of federal government services, due to Trump’s insistence on Congress spending at least $5 billion on building a wall on the border, which Democrats are insistent on blocking.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) have demanded airtime after the president’s address, to counter whatever arguments he may put forth.
