Poochy politics: #dogsatpollingstations trends on Twitter, as Brexit-tired Brits vote in local polls

As Brexit-weary UK citizens head to voting booths to cast their votes in the local council elections across England and Northern Ireland, it’s been left to #dogsatpollingstations to bring some fun to proceedings on social media.

Labour and the Liberal Democrats are predicted to take advantage of some bruising losses for PM Theresa May’s Tories, with Conservative peer Lord Hayward projecting a loss of 800 seats for the party. It would be the Tories’ worst performance since 1995.

It’s been left to pooches to raise the spirits of Britons fed up with the ongoing Brexit debacle. Twitter has been awash with pictures of dogs posing happily… and not so eagerly, outside the UK’s polling stations on Thursday.

Protest vote

Elections are being held for 248 English councils as well as 11 in Northern Ireland, with 6 mayoral contests to be decided. Polling stations close at 10pm. Counting of votes will begin at 8am on Friday morning.
