UN mission calls for weeklong truce in Tripoli, Libya

The UN mission to Libya has called for a weeklong ceasefire in the capital, Tripoli. Forces loyal to a military commander are currently battling militias loosely allied with a UN-supported government.

The “one-week humanitarian truce” would begin at 4am (0200 GMT) on Monday, AP reported, citing the UN mission. It is calling on all parties to cease military operations, including reconnaissance and mobilization.

However, it was not immediately clear if any of the factions in Tripoli had agreed to the truce, which would come as many Muslims across the world begin observing the fasting month of Ramadan.
