Billionaire Alkiviades “Alki” David was detained in the Caribbean after a search of his private jet found approximately 5000 cannabis plants, worth about $1.3 million, according to The Vancouver Sun. David belongs to the Leventis family, who is worth almost $6 billion as a result of their massive commercial bottling facility in Europe recently merging with Coca-Cola.

David was arrested by the anti-narcotics unit at Robert L. Bradshaw international airport and has been charged with Possession with Intent to Supply, Possession of Controlled Drugs and Importation of a Controlled Drug into the Federation after his plane was stopped by customs authorities on the Caribbean Island of St. Kitts.

His business partner, Chase Ergen, heir to a satellite fortune, was also arrested, according to the Daily Mail. David was also traveling with Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers and his family.

Davi, estimated to be worth more than $3 billion, claimed that the plants are “pure hemp,” which is legal and contains negligible quantities of the intoxicating compound THC. Officials seem to obviously disagree with David's assessment, at least for now.

Additionally, there were also an unknown number of seeds and a variety of other cannabis products found on his plane. The plants were likely destined for David's medical cannabis company, called SwissX, which specializes in products containing CBD.

David told the Daily Mail: "Jonathan Rhys Meyers' mother-in-law and wife were cavity searched. We left the airport after the search but were then arrested after trying to leave the island a few days later."

Ergen was reportedly arrested after being found with what David said is medicinal ketamine.

David called Ergen's arrest a "set up", stating: "This was his medication for bi polar. He was talking to Prime Minister Harris when he was suddenly arrested. He is going into his second night behind bars."

Both men issued a statement stating that they were just trying to make the island "a leader" in the CBD hemp industry:

'Our intention is to work with the government, the courts, the banks, the business sector, and the farmers to develop a fair system that creates thousands of jobs on the island and uses Swissx's international distribution network to make St. Kitts-Nevis cannabis products among the most sought after in the world.

'It is our intention to quickly see a surge in the nation's GDP that will benefit everyone. This is an economic development initiative for raising the quality of life in conjunction with local SKN Caribbean partners. Former PM Denzil Douglas is working closely with us.

'We've have met with Prime Minister Harris to talk about coordinating support efforts before we leave next week for meetings in Dominica and other Caribbean island nations that have shown great interest in our cooperative partnership. Those talks have broken down and led to the arrests of David and Ergen. David and Ergen's legal team has arrived from the UK and will be filing lawsuits against PM Harris and the government this week.'

David was released after paying cash bail of $30,000 and he will be due to make an appearance at Basseterre Magistrate Court on May 14. Meanwhile, he has to surrender all of his travel documents and report daily to the local Frigate Bay Police Station. And this isn’t the first of David‘s casual "misunderstandings". Last month he was ordered to pay more than $10 million to a former employee who he allegedly fired after she refused to perform sex acts at work.

We get the feeling this isn’t the last time we'll be hearing from David.
