Hours after mission control lost contact with the Vikram lunar lander during the final descent stage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been updated on the mission status and addressed the nation.

Modi, who observed the Friday night landing attempt and said India was proud of its courageous scientists, is making a live televised address early Saturday morning.

Space scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation spent nearly six hours analyzing various data and telemetry they received before communication with the spacecraft was lost at an altitude of roughly 2 kilometers above the moon's surface.
