A neighbor of Botham Jean, the man who was killed in his own apartment by police officer Amber Guyger, was gunned down outside of an apartment complex on Friday night.

Joshua Brown, 28, gave crucial testimony during the trial of Guyger, who was eventually convicted of murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison for being responsible for the death of Jean. He was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital after he was shot, and died soon after from his injuries.

No suspects have been identified or apprehended at the present time, but witnesses claim they saw a silver sedan speed out of the apartment complex following the gun fire.

“He bravely came forward to testify when others wouldn’t. If we had more people like him, we would have a better world,” Dallas County prosecutor Jason Hermus said following news of Brown’s death.

Lee Merritt, who is the lawyer representing Botham Jean’s family, noted that Brown had expressed worries that gun fire would take his life as well. Sadly, Brown’s fears were realized very shortly after he expressed that grim sentiment.

“Brown was still visibly shaken up from the incident when he took the stand to testify on behalf of the prosecution. His murder underscores the reality of the black experience in America,” Merritt wrote in a Facebook post.

“A former athlete turned entrepreneur— Brown lived in constant fear that he could be the next victim of gun violence, either state sanctioned or otherwise. We have more work to do deal with the constant threats to our community both from within and without,” Merritt added.

The suspicious timing of Brown’s murder has fueled conspiracy theories about who was responsible for his untimely death to sweep across social media platforms.

“I just watched his testimony on Friday. I do not believe this is a coincidence,” one individual wrote in a Facebook post.

The trial concluded last week with an emotional display from Botham Jean’s brother, Brandt, who embraced Guyger with a hug following her sentencing and offered his love and forgiveness.

“I know if you go to God and ask him, he will forgive you,” Jean said to Guyger on the witness stand.
