Oh do come on folks.

Philip Haney, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) whistleblower who was an outspoken critic of the administration of former President Barack Obama, was found dead Friday, about 40 miles east of Sacramento, Calif., local authorities said.

Haney, 66, “appeared to have suffered a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the Amador County Sheriff’s Office said in a release. Sheriff and coroner Martin A. Ryan shared the initial details of the case.

Right.

He was found outside his car with (1) a gunshot wound to the chest and (2) a firearm right near his body.  I assume there were powder burns on his chest, which would be consistent with a contact or near-contact discharge.

But if you think about this why would he get out of the car before shooting himself?

In addition, he was engaged to be married.  Is either of those consistent with a suicide?

I think not.

Now I can’t get inside the dead man’s head, but I can tell you that if you intend suicide you might well decide to drive somewhere outside of town, in a more-desolate area, in your car, and kill yourself.  Yep.

But suicides are overwhelmingly self-inflicted shots to the head and someone who does so and drives to wherever he or she does it invariably does it in the vehicle.

Why?

For several reasons — if you truly intend suicide you don’t want to be stopped before you can pull it off.  The more people who can see you in the process of doing it the more-likely someone will try to intervene.  There’s no reason to give a wet crap if the car is damaged or covered in blood because you’re about to be dead.  Now if you waltz off into the forest somewhere and do it there, fine, but on the side of the road?  Nope.  And finally, while getting shot in the chest is a very reliable way to die it also is likely to hurt quite a lot, where shooting yourself in the head is instantaneous and doesn’t hurt at all.

Nearly everyone who wants to kill themselves isn’t interested in being the victim of any sort of torture on the way out.
