Biden turns his nose up at Comey endorsement, as anti-Trump officials flock to his campaign

With former Vice President Joe Biden hoping to reassert himself in the polls on Super Tuesday, his campaign has cheekily turned down an endorsement from a veritable anti-Trump superstar: former FBI Director James Comey.

As Democrats in 14 states cast their votes in the crucial ‘Super Tuesday’ primaries, Comey took to Twitter to lend his support to Joe Biden, now one of two moderates hoping to close the gap with socialist Senator Bernie Sanders and clench his party’s nomination.

Though a Republican until his firing by President Donald Trump in 2018, Comey wrote that the Democrats are the “party dedicated to restoring values” in the White House. “We need candidate who cares about all Americans and will restore decency, dignity to the office,” he continued. “There is a reason Trump fears @joebiden and roots for Bernie. #Biden2020”

Biden’s campaign was having none of it. Rapid response director Andrew Bates shot back at the former FBI chief.

“Yes, customer service? I just received a package that I very much did not order. How can I return it, free of charge?” he tweeted. Bates later claimed that his tweet was a light-hearted joke, and added that the Biden campaign appreciates "the vote of anyone repelled by Donald Trump."

Biden’s campaign, which has leant on his repeated assertion that he is the only man capable of unseating Trump and restoring “the soul of America,” has picked up some high profile endorsements in recent days, with fellow establishment-friendly candidates Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar dropping out of the race and getting behind the former VP. However, despite Comey’s outspoken anti-Trump credentials, Biden's aides likely felt that embracing a former Republican wouldn’t play well with voters.

However, Comey is not the only anti-Trump lawman to go for Joe ahead of the Super Tuesday vote. Former CIA Director John Brennan - who has spent his post-Langley career complaining about Trump on cable TV and firing off verbose tweets at the commander-in-chief - gave Biden his support on Monday, calling him “one of the most honest, decent, practical, & experienced individuals with whom I have ever worked.”

Completing the anti-Trump trifecta, Obama administration National Securty Adviser Susan Rice also stumped for Biden on Monday, tweeting that “there is no one kinder, more empathetic and caring that @joebiden.” Rice came to infamy after Trump’s election for asking that a number of Trump campaign officials be “unmasked” in intelligence reports. After initially lying about the unmasking, Rice admitted to Congress that he asked the US’ spy agencies to reveal the officials’ identities.

The endorsement of a host of anti-Trump intelligence and security officials comes as the Democratic establishment coalesces around Biden. In addition to Buttigieg and Klobuchar’s endorsements, Biden has been tipped by three governors, eight Senators, more than 50 Representatives, and hundreds of state-level and former federal lawmakers. Celebrities Cher, Tom Hanks, and Alec Baldwin are among the tinseltown royalty also backing Biden.

Whether these endorsements can help Biden pip Sanders at the ballot box remains to be seen. The progressive senator is still topping most national polls, even though to the right, and to Sanders’ fiercely loyal base of supporters, the Democratic Party machine looks set to put all of its weight against him, as it did in 2016.

Trump has jeered at the Democrats for propping up Biden in spite of Sanders’ grassroots popularity. “They are staging a coup against Bernie!” he tweeted on Monday, before jibing that “Sleepy Joe” doesn’t know “what office he’s running for.”
