Americans are just now beginning their temporary new lives under coronavirus protocols, and, thus far, the worst stories we’ve heard have been from the toilet paper aisle of the grocery store.

After President Trump’s national emergency declaration on Friday, the nation began bracing for this new wold of “social distancing” and some self-quarantining – where applicable.  The COVID-19 virus itself is not terribly dangerous for folks outside of the at-risk populations, (the elderly and the immunocompromised), but the stealthy spread of the virus is what these measures are meant to prevent.

Now, in order to better identify potential hot spots for the illness, drive-thru testing centers are popping up in some of the hardest hit locales, including New Rochelle, New York.

New York’s first coronavirus drive-through testing center opened Friday morning in New Rochelle — the Westchester County town with the highest cluster of COVID-19 cases in the United States.

“This is drive-thru testing — something I didn’t hear of last week, but we’re doing this week,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

“Drive-through testing means people in this community can call a telephone number, make an appointment, and they can come to be tested and literally drive through the testing facilities.”

The set-up includes six drive-through lanes to handle 200 cars a day, Cuomo said. That’s about 15 minutes per car, he said.

The medical staff will come to the car, perform two tests per person and then send the swabs to BioReference Laboratories, the research lab in the state charged with processing.

The news comes just a day after President Trump issued a national emergency declaration in reference to the virus, which will open up much needed resources for both medical and economics recovery.
