Pressure on US Pharmacies NOT to Prescribe Hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19

16-5-2020 < 21st Century Wire 38 255 words

Yesterday, it was announced that the UK government will spend £20 million to purchase stocks of hydroxychloroquin, a known generic antimalarial drug which received considerable attention after Donald Trump began promoting it as a potential cure for COVID-19 back in March.

This is both a partisan political issue and a corporate power issue. Because chloroquine is generic and cheap (only $13 per prescription) it is not profitable for the major pharmaceutical companies who naturally want to make as much money during the COVID crisis as is possible. Instead, industry representatives are pushing more expensive solutions like Remdesivir made by Gilead pharmaceuticals (roughly $900 per course). It’s no secret how enmeshed Big Pharma is with Washington, it’s political leaders and its health officials like Dr Anthony Fauci who heads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

As a result of both the Democrat and mainstream media disdain for Trump, combined with pressure from Big Pharma, it now appears that serious political pressure has been put to bear on pharmacies across America to discourage the prescription of hydroxychloroquin to patients suffering from symptoms of COVID-19.
