This is an interesting essay that makes the far-left case against Trump as an incipient dictator. This article is not without nuance, although my view of Trump is the one that I have always had, which is that Trump is a neo-Nixonian, a liberal Republican with a right-wing populist flavor. Only today, the culture has shifted far enough leftward that yesterday’s “silent majority” are now the “deplorable” culturally conservative minority. These Proud Boy-types are the present-day version of groups like the hardhats from the Nixon era. As was the case with Nixon, Trump’s ego is his own worst enemy.

Any kind of second Trump administration will be even worse than the first, but if Trump steals the election and gets away with it, the erosion of the constitutional, republican system of government will be dramatically greater. The formal political structures probably won’t just disappear, but they’ll become a lot weaker and hollower than they are now.
