Big data and crowdsourcing were (and still are, if we can fix them) supposed to tell us sweeping things about our society. They're supposed to usher in an era where tweets can predict elections and mass protests, Facebook likes can predict a movie’s box office opening, and Google searches can predict where the next disease outbreak is going to be. The problem is that the results are often not any better than what we were already getting.
