Cartel-linked illegal remains free after shooting a transgender migrant in Chicago

In a disturbing incident, a transgender migrant was attacked in broad daylight in Chicago. Adding to the tragedy, the suspect, identified as an illegal immigrant from Venezuela with connections to a drug cartel, is escaping prosecution.

The situation takes a darker turn when it's revealed that just two days before the attack, the suspect was charged with several felonies, including illegal possession of a firearm. And the troubling saga continued on March 3, when the suspect was once again apprehended for driving without a license.

The victim, a transgender woman from Venezuela, was waiting for transportation outside a nightclub in the mostly Hispanic American neighborhood of Little Village. This is where she was confronted by the assailant, who fired multiple shots at her, causing severe injuries. The attack, treated as a hate crime by investigators, occurred at around 4:30 a.m. on Feb. 4. (Related: Chicago crowned MURDER CAPITAL of the United States for 12th consecutive year.)

According to reports, the victim and her friends had been socializing at VLive, a club known as a gathering place for Venezuelan migrants. Witness statements and police records corroborate the harrowing ordeal.

Despite the identification of the suspect, who has ties to a drug cartel as per federal authorities, and the recovery of key evidence implicating him, including shell casings and surveillance footage, Cook County prosecutors have opted not to pursue charges.

The concerning pattern of leniency extends further as the suspect was released following a judge's order, only to be swiftly arrested again for questioning.

Despite multiple encounters with law enforcement and repeated criminal behavior – including at least one new encounter after the murder – the suspect remains free. The latest encounter with the suspect was on March 3, when he faced yet another arrest, this time for traffic violations near a migrant shelter in the Loop, Chicago's central business district. His case was dismissed the following day.

Local activists enraged over Chicago police's lack of progress with the case

The failure to hold the suspect accountable and the apparent impunity he enjoys underscore systemic flaws in the justice system, fueling concerns about public safety and the erosion of trust in law enforcement.

The police claim the investigation has faced significant obstacles, including the reluctance of the victim and a key witness to further cooperate with the department.

One police report even noted that the sole witness who can positively identify the individual has refused to answer any new questions regarding the murder. The victim has also refused to cooperate because she believes she was targeted for being a prostitute and fears the alleged assailant's association with violent Venezuelan gang El Tren De Aragua.

Local activists have condemned the lack of progress in the case, highlighting what they perceive as a two-tiered system of justice prevalent in heavily Hispanic American neighborhoods like Little Village.

Activist Baltazar Enriquez expressed frustration, stating, "When it involves a gang member, a migrant, a transgender woman or a woman, these cases are not adequately investigated." Enriquez emphasized that the failure to prosecute in this and similar cases compounds the distress for residents in the area.

"This issue has been a longstanding concern in our community because residents feel re-victimized," Enriquez remarked
