from The National Pulse:

Residents of the Maryland town of Ridgely, located on the Eastern Shore, are apprehensive following the local government’s largely unexplained suspension of its entire police force. In its announcement of the move, the local government said other agencies would shoulder the public safety responsibilities. They offered no explanation for the suspension to town residents, who have now begun demanding transparency from the town officials.

Laura Cline, a Rutledge resident, expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of proper communication. “What’s very concerning is that they didn’t communicate with us in an honest and open way,” she said in a recent interview after the suspension announcement. She added: “Treat us with respect. We’re adults — thinking, rational adults who deserve the truth.” Other citizens have voiced similar concerns, feeling shocked and questioning their local lawmakers’ integrity.

Last week, according to the town’s website, Ridgely’s three-member commission had “suspended with pay the entirety of the Ridgely Police Department.” The notice stated the Office of the State Prosecutor has launched an investigation into potential misconduct. However, no other details were posted.

Currently, neighboring Caroline County’s sheriff is handling emergency calls for Ridgely. Maryland State Police have said they will also contribute to policing efforts in the town if needed. Before the police department’s suspension, its half-dozen employees provided emergency and law enforcement services for the town of 1,600 people.
