Uncovered: Trump’s secret immunity deal with Boeing

7-4-2024 < Attack the System 23 433 words

Boeing’s horrendous safety record defies belief. A door flew off mid-flight. Then an entire panel fell off. An engine caught fire. A plane took a terrifying nosedive, injuring dozens. The list just keeps growing.1

But there might be a reason why Boeing’s planes are suddenly having so many problems — and it all goes back to Donald Trump.

Just before Donald Trump left office, his administration cut a secret immunity deal with Boeing, shielding the company from criminal charges relating to plane crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed over 300 people. All Boeing had to do was pay a fine equal to 2% of their annual revenue and promise to do better in the future.2

No wonder Boeing thinks it can get away with cutting corners.

We’re calling on President Biden to undo Trump’s dirty deal with Boeing before an even bigger tragedy happens. We’ve already mobilized tens of thousands of people, and now we’re turning up the heat on President Biden to make sure Boeing is held fully accountable.

In January 2021, the Trump Justice Department gave Boeing immunity for accidents in 2018 and 2019, over the objections of the families of the hundreds of people who died.3 The deal allowed Boeing to avoid criminal prosecution, and it shielded the company’s senior executives from such charges, too.

But there’s a provision in the agreement that requires Boeing to stamp out fraud within its company operations and among its contractors and subcontractors. And there’s ample evidence that the compnay has failed to do so.

One example: the door plug that flew out of a Boeing plane over Portland, Oregon, in January. The manufacturer of the plug allegedly engaged in a “fraudulent scheme” to hide manufacturing defects.4

Luckily, no one got hurt in the door plug accident. But Boeing shouldn’t be allowed to hand-wave away these deadly issues. Fifty people were injured, for instance, when one of its planes took a nosedive recently in New Zealand.5

The Biden administration must take concrete action to protect passengers — and immediately hold Boeing accountable.
