Reading Cut cover star Brittney Griner’s memoir, Coming Home, I expected to be struck by the harrowing details of her life in Russian confinement. And I was. But I was somehow more bowled over by how romantic the whole thing was. That pulsing beneath this nightmare was an epic queer love story between Griner and her wife, Cherelle, who at the time was a third-year law student balancing two jobs and exams with calls to the State Department to get her wife home safe. As the book ended, I desperately wanted to know about Griner’s next chapter, as a soon-to-be parent and WNBA hooper and gender-parity activist. Who better to get her to open up about her plans for the future than Megan Rapinoe, her fellow Olympian and one of the other most famous athlete-activists in the world. The resulting conversation covers everything from the unexpected ways Griner has found joy since returning home to her hopes for parenthood — and even ends with plans for a double date. |
