Thursday Fiat Chrysler agreed to pay nearly $800 million to settle lawsuits over its installation of emissions test-cheating devices on diesel Jeeps and trucks that led to an additional 35,000 tons of pollution.
Over half of the money, $300 million, will be paid to the U.S. government as a fine, and another $280 million will go to individual car buyers who sued the company. California will receive $19 million to offset harmful emissions from the vehicles. Additional funds will go to further remedial efforts, recalls, warranties and other fines.
