by Jack Montgomery, The National Pulse:

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire, put down a coup attempt on Sunday. Opposition leader Christian Malanga, described as a “naturalized” U.S. citizen, was killed in the fighting in the Congolese capital of Kinshasa, and at least three U.S. citizens have been arrested. Local media have accused the men of being U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agents or associates.

“An attempted coup d’etat has been stopped by the defense and security forces,” said General Sylvain Ekenge. He confirmed that “foreigners” had been involved in the putsch. Malenga’s son Marcel, a TikTok influencer who spent much of his life in the U.S., is among the putschists captured by security forces.

Joe Biden’s ambassador in the country, Lucy Tamlyn, claimed she was “shocked by the events [in Congo] and very worried by the reports of American citizens allegedly involved.”

The CIA has been involved in coups and counter-coups in the Congo since at least the Dwight Eisenhower administration and is believed to have been involved in the assassination of the country’s first prime minister, Patrice Lumumba.

The resource-rich country is one of many in Africa in which U.S. influence has been waning, with a draft military cooperation agreement with Russia being signed in March. The Biden regime has recently been pressured to reduce its presence in Chad and to withdraw altogether from Niger, where outgoing American troops now have to share facilities with incoming Russian forces. Russia has already displaced the U.S. and its European allies from Mali and Burkina Faso.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is not to be confused with its western neighbor, the Republic of the Congo. Russian influence is also growing in the Republic of Congo.
